Why Choose Silicone Implants?

Breast Implants Sacramento, CAWhy Choose Silicone Implants?

One of the most important decisions you’ll make as a breast augmentation patient is choosing between saline and silicone implants. Both types of implants have their own advantages and drawbacks, but the majority of breast augmentation patients select silicone implants. During your breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Donald Hause, you will review your options and select the best fit for your needs and cosmetic goals.

Benefits of Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are FDA-approved for women at least 22 years old (or breast reconstruction patients of any age). They are filled with a soft, elastic gel material that many women and plastic surgeons believe feels more like natural breast tissue than saline material.

Because of the consistency of the filling, silicone implants are less likely to cause visible ripping on the outsides of the breast.

Thanks to the natural feel of silicone, some women choose to have the implants placed above the chest muscle (i.e., closer to the surface of the skin). This technique typically does not cause as much post-operative discomfort as placing the implants underneath the chest muscle, so the recovery can be quicker.

Other Considerations

It’s important to consider a few more factors before choosing silicone implants. They come pre-filled from the manufacturer, so they require a larger incision for placement than saline implants do. The incision isn’t large by any means, but it is not as small as an incision for saline implants.

Another consideration is that it is typically difficult to detect a rupture in silicone implants because of the sticky, coherent nature of the filling. Free silicone tends to stay in the capsule that forms around the implant. Leaked silicone gel won’t cause any long-term health problems, but it can gradually affect the shape of the breast. Breast implant manufacturers recommend regular MRI scans or follow-up appointments with the doctor to check for any problems.

Finally, silicone implants may be more expensive than saline implants. However, many women feel that the increased cost is worth it for a more natural look and feel.
