What to Expect After Your Dermal Filler Treatment

Dermal Filler Treatment

While there isn’t much downtime necessary after dermal filler treatments, there are some precautions you should take to minimize post-op side effects from the injections. Sacramento plastic surgeon Dr. Donald Hause outlines what you should and shouldn’t do post-treatment.

Take It Easy

Avoid doing anything too strenuous for the rest of the day after dermal filler treatment. It is not that the treatment itself is affected by strenuous activity, but the extra blood flow accompanying exercise or physical labor may increase bruising. The same holds true for alcohol consumption. Wait until the following day before having an alcoholic beverage.

The face might appear overly full after dermal filler treatment. Do not worry —  the effect goes away within 48 hours.

Stay Out of the Sun

Expect the treated areas to experience some swelling and redness. Until those effects subside, stay out of the sun. Do not expose the treated area to any excess heat until it is back to normal. That means also staying out of saunas, hot tubs, and tanning beds.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Any mild discomfort resulting from the dermal filler treatment generally resolves after taking over-the-counter acetaminophen. Other over-the-counter medications that may prove useful in the day or so after dermal filler treatments include a daytime antihistamine for swelling reduction, and diphenhydramine, marketed under the brand Benadryl, at night.

Rare Side Effects

Any side effects associated with dermal filler treatment are usually mild and consist of bruising, redness, numbness, and swelling. One potential issue concerns the migration of the filler to another part of the face, leaving lumpiness in its wake. Dermal fillers are not permanent, so any lumps eventually disappear, but no one wants lumps on their face even temporarily. When an experienced practitioner performs dermal filler treatments, the odds of filler migration are greatly reduced.
