The Four S’s When Considering Breast Augmentation

Breast AugmentationConsidering Breast Augmentation?

If you are considering breast augmentation, you likely have many questions, including, where do I start? To help you plan and prepare for your procedure, Dr. Donald Hause of Sacramento Aesthetic Surgery shares four important factors to keep in mind. It may be helpful to think of the following as the “four S’s” of breast augmentation.

Silicone vs. Saline Implants

Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel that mimics the look and feel of natural breast tissue. Saline implants are filled with sterile saline solution once they are put in place.

Each implant type comes with distinct benefits and limitations. Silicone implants are preferred by many women because they resemble the look of natural breasts, more so than saline implants. However, ruptures and leaks are harder to detect in silicone implants. Saline implants can be placed using a slightly smaller incision than silicone implants, minimizing scarring. When a saline implant ruptures or leaks, the saltwater solution will be safely absorbed by the body. However, the affected breast will look noticeably deflated. Choosing your implants is an important and personal choice. Your plastic surgeon should take the time to explain both implants in detail with you to make sure you choose the type that is more appropriate for you.

Surgical Incision

A common concern among breast augmentation patients is whether their incision scars will be noticeable. A talented and experienced plastic surgeon is well versed in advanced incision techniques that help minimize scarring and produce the most beautiful results possible. There are four basic incision approaches used to place breast implants. Each approach has pros and cons. For instance, the axillary approach (under the armpit) may hide the incision, but is associated with more complications. Size

Do you believe bigger is better, or are you seeking a modest boost to your current breast size? While there is no right or wrong answer to this, there are certain things you should consider before making a final decision. For example, if you have a small, petite frame, it’s best to choose a smaller breast size, to avoid having your overall body figure looking out of balance. If you have broad shoulders or a larger frame, consider larger breast implants that will complement your figure.

Surgeon

Last, but definitely not least, you will need to choose a plastic surgeon whom you trust has the training, experience and surgical skill to achieve the results you seek. Make sure your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and has years of experience performing breast augmentation procedures. If you are planning on combining implants with breast lift, make sure your surgeon has performed both procedures.
