Liposuction Myths Explained

Liposuction MythsLiposuction Myths Explained

Since its introduction in the 1970s, liposuction has become one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the United States. This outpatient procedure is capable of removing stubborn fat deposits from targeted areas of the body like the buttocks, abdomen, hips, upper arms and thighs.

Unfortunately, despite the success and popularity of liposuction, a number of myths surround the procedure. Today, Dr. Donald Hause dispels the three most common liposuction myths.

Liposuction Is an Ideal Weight Loss Tool

In reality, the best candidates for liposuction are healthy individuals who are near their perfect body weight and have only localized fat deposits (which have resisted diet and exercise). Liposuction is not the ideal procedure for someone who is suffering from obesity. In fact, it is not a weight loss tool at all. Typically, patients who undergo liposuction procedures will only lose a pound or so when they check the scales. In addition, you should note that liposuction does not get rid of cellulite (dispelling another myth often perpetuated with the first misconception).

Fat Will “Return” After Liposuction

Let’s set the record straight: liposuction removes fat cells permanently. They do not re-grow in the area treated by liposuction. Even so, not all of your fat cells are removed with liposuction and you can still gain weight, which causes the remaining fat cells to enlarge.

In order to maintain the results of liposuction, you will need to adhere to a healthy lifestyle, which includes following a proper diet and getting regular exercise. If you don’t, you will likely see unwanted variations in your results.

Liposuction Is for Women Only

Liposuction is available to both men and women. Anyone who is healthy, close to their ideal weight and unhappy with problem areas laden with stubborn fat deposits, may be a candidate. While we are on the topic, there is no set age where men or women are too old for liposuction. If you are healthy, close to your perfect body weight and unhappy with localized obstinate fat deposits, liposuction may be the right solution for you.
