Non-surgical Facelift Options

The results of a surgical facelift may last longer than non-surgical options, but the procedure requires considerable downtime. Non-surgical facelift options are less expensive and recovery time is minimal. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Donald Hause of Sacramento Aesthetic Surgery explains the various non-surgical facelift options available.

Botox

While botulism toxin may be one of the deadliest bacteria on the planet, the minute amount of the toxin in Botox has an excellent safety record and is now synonymous with quick wrinkle reduction.

A Botox injection works by paralyzing the facial muscles causing wrinkles around the forehead, eyes and mouth. Well-known as a “lunch-hour” procedure, Botox injections involve little or no downtime. The results last a few months, after which the treatments are repeated. Over time, Botox appointments may be spaced further apart as the effects last longer.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are best for removing age spots and acne scars. They can mitigate the appearance of some wrinkles. Various types of acids, including alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy acids, are used. Deeper skin peels may require phenol.

Chemical peels remove damaged skin cells. After healing, fine wrinkles and scars are minimized.

The chemical peel is applied to the face, with the entire procedure taking about 15 minutes. Patients can return to normal activities immediately, but they must wear sunscreen to protect their skin. The deeper the peel, the longer the healing process will take.  Peels may cause temporary swelling and blistering.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin to restore volume to the face and smooth lines and wrinkles. They are also used for plumping lips. Depending on the type of filler, the results may last a few months to two years.

Juvederm and Restylane are among the most popular dermal fillers. Each has several products in its collection, targeted for specific cosmetic purposes.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing not only lessens wrinkles but can also reduce acne and other scars. It is ideal for treating fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Short pulses of light delivered in a pixelated pattern heat skin. These controlled injuries stimulate the natural healing process.

Several treatments are necessary to achieve the desired results. Expect a few days of downtime after laser resurfacing. Many patients look like they have a mild sunburn post-treatment.

RF Energy Treatments

Radiofrequency (RF) energy treatments tighten the skin via energy waves that heat the dermis. The dermis is the skin’s thickest layer, consisting primarily of connective tissue. The heat stimulates the production of collagen, the body’s most abundant protein. It is collagen that supplies firmness to the skin.

Collagen production declines with aging. Loss of collagen results in wrinkles and sagging. RF energy treatments not only tighten the skin but reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

This painless procedure takes approximately one hour.
