Preparing for Breast Reduction

Preparing for breast reductionPreparing for Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery can be a life-changing procedure. The majority of patients report experiencing both physical and emotional relief following surgery. Dr. Donald Hause of Sacramento Aesthetic Surgery believes the most satisfied patients are those who are well informed and prepared for surgery ahead of time. In this blog post, Dr. Hause shares must-know tips all patients should know before undergoing breast reduction surgery. Dr. Hause offers Lejour Breast Reduction at his Sacramento office.

Quit Smoking (and Drinking)

Not only is smoking terrible for your overall health, it can also increase your chances of complications during surgery. Tobacco causes problems with circulation and increases the risk of excessive bleeding during surgery. You must stop smoking at least four weeks prior to surgery. It is also wise to not pick up smoking after surgery, as it can interfere with your healing process. In the same vein, you should also avoid drinking alcohol before and after surgery.

Evaluate Your Medication

Prior to your surgery, our staff will direct you to avoid taking aspirin and other blood-thinning medications at least two weeks before surgery. Such medications can cause complications during surgery, such as excessive bleeding. Certain supplements can also counteract your post-op medications, adversely affecting the healing process.

Arrange for Care after Surgery

Anticipate being off your feet for the first few days after surgery. You will need to avoid strenuous activity, including lifting young children. Ask a loved one to help you with child care (if necessary) as well as running errands and completing chores around your home. This will allow you to focus on recovery and healing properly. Resuming strenuous activity too soon after surgery can lead to complications and even cause your incision scars to open.

Stock Up on Recovery Essentials

Keep in mind that your energy levels will be low after surgery, so it is wise to prepare your home ahead of time. Set up a recovery station, whether it be your couch or bed. Lay out comfy pillows and blankets and go pick up any items you anticipate needing, including water bottles, easy-to-prepare meals, hair ties, cold compresses, ice packs, and entertainment (e.g., magazines, DVDs).

Anticipate the Emotional Process

Breast reduction surgery can cause you to feel a range of emotions, from excitement to anxiety. If you feel nervous or anxious prior to surgery, we invite you to speak to a member of our team. Our dedicated staff is available to answer all of your questions and address any concerns you may have regarding the procedure or recovery process. Many of our past patients say having a helping hand from a loved one during the recovery makes the healing process easier both mentally and physically.
