Submental Liposuction
Submental liposuction is best suited to patients with excess fat in the chin and neck area. Along with leaving you with one chin instead of two, submental liposuction is also an ideal way to better define the jawline. The surgeon sculpts the chin, neck or jawline for a more attractive contour.
Only non-smokers in good health with a stable body weight are candidates for submental liposuction. This is not a procedure for weight loss. Skin elasticity is necessary so that once the contours are changed, the skin retracts over them. Those with saggy skin may find the skin on the chin or jaw somewhat loose. Other procedures can correct that.
Submental Liposuction Procedure
Patients undergoing submental liposuction receive local anesthesia. The surgeon makes tiny incisions in the targeted area. A thin, hollow tube known as a cannula is then inserted. The cannula suctions out the targeted fat. The surgeon then sculpts the chin, neck or jawline for a more attractive contour.
The procedure takes approximately an hour and is done on an outpatient basis.
Submental Liposuction Recovery
Expect healing from submental liposuction to take about a week. During that time, patients must wear a compressive neck dressing. Bruising and swelling are common during recuperation, but those not engaged in heavy physical labor can usually return to work a day or so after the procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least three weeks.
Any discomfort generally responds to over-the-counter pain relievers. Sleeping with your head elevated can reduce swelling.
Results of submental liposuction are not immediate. You should see the cosmetic benefits within three months.
Submental Liposuction and Neck Lift
Some patients may want to combine submental liposuction with a neck lift. The neck lift tightens the skin and offers improved contouring. This combined procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Discuss with your surgeon combining submental liposuction with facelift, chin implants and/or other surgeries.
