Top Plastic Surgery Procedures

More people are seeking plastic surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). According to the organization’s latest report, there were 17.5 million procedures performed in 2017, a 2 percent increase from the previous year.

In this blog post, Sacramento plastic surgeon Dr. Donald Hause reveals the top plastic surgery procedures.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation was the top cosmetic surgical procedure of 2017, increasing 3 percent from 2016. The most popular way to increase the size and volume of the breasts continues to be with breast implants. Women can choose either saline, silicone gel, or highly cohesive silicone breast implants (“gummy bear” implants). Breast augmentation can be combined with breast lift to address breast sag (ptosis).

Liposuction

Liposuction came in second, with a 5 percent increase from the previous year. Liposuction removes unwanted fatty deposits that cannot be removed with exercise and diet alone. The procedure is popular because it can be used on various parts of the body including the abdomen, back, thighs, upper arms, chin, and neck.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping surgery, is the third most popular surgical procedure of 2017, despite being down 2 percent from the previous year. The procedure is used to address various cosmetic concerns with the nose, including size, a bump on the nasal bridge, a crooked nasal tip, and asymmetrical or overly large nostrils. Rhinoplasty can also correct structural deformities and improve breathing.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), which saw no change from 2016, was the fourth most popular surgical procedure. It addresses signs of aging in the upper and/or lower eyelids, including puffy skin and tissue, lines, and wrinkles. Eyelid surgery is popular because it can transform the eye area from tired and older-looking to bright and energetic.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck rounded out the top five surgical procedures. Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tuck saw a 2 percent increase from 2016, which was just enough to bump facelift into sixth place. Tummy tuck eliminates loose, excess skin on the abdomen and repairs weakened or separated muscles, a common occurrence after pregnancy and weight gain. Following a tummy tuck, the abdomen is flatter and firmer.
