Latest Trends in Plastic Surgery

Latest trends in plastic surgeryAccording to the latest report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Americans spent more than $16 billion on plastic surgery in 2016, the most ever. The annual report also reveals the most popular surgical and non-surgical procedures, as well as the latest trends in the industry. Respected Sacramento plastic surgeon Dr. Donald Hause breaks down some of the report’s findings in this blog post.

Facelifts Make a Comeback

Facelifts, which dropped from the top five most popular surgical procedures in 2015, made a comeback with a 4 percent increase in 2016.

“Patients are captivated by instant improvements to the face. It’s evident in the popularity of apps and filters that change how we can shape and shade our faces,” said ASPS president Dr. Debra Johnson. “While there are more options than ever to rejuvenate the face, a facelift done by a board-certified plastic surgeon can give a dramatic, longer-lasting result which is why I am not surprised to see facelifts back in the top five most popular cosmetic surgical procedures.”

In general, facial rejuvenation procedures continued to surge in 2016 as more patients seek to turn back the clock with both surgical and non-surgical options like eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and Botox.

Breast Augmentation Continues to be the Top Surgical Procedure

There were a total of 290,467 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2016, making it the top cosmetic surgical procedure for the tenth year in a row. Approximately 84 percent of breast augmentation procedures used silicone implants and 16 percent were performed using saline implants. Rounding out the top five surgical procedures are:

Minimally Invasive Procedures Rise

Minimally invasive procedures accounted for 15.4 million of all cosmetic procedures performed in 2016, a 3 percent increase from the previous year. These procedures are an effective solution for various signs of aging without surgery and extended downtime. The top minimally invasive procedures are:

  • Botox (7 million procedures)
  • Dermal fillers (2.6 million procedures)
  • Chemical peel (1.36 million procedures)
  • Laser hair removal (1.1 million procedures)
  • Microdermabrasion (775,000 procedures)
