For many of us, Memorial Day weekend signifies the start of summer. And while barbecues, pool parties and beach time are meant to be enjoyed, the hot, sizzling weather can take a toll on your skin. To help you prepare your skin for the dog days of summer, Dr. Donald Hause of Sacramento Aesthetic Surgery shares his top skin care tips.
Protect Yourself from Sun Exposure
Overexposure to the sun causes a range of skin problems, from sunburns to premature wrinkles. If possible, avoid direct, midday (between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) exposure. If you do plan on going outside, wear the proper protection. Broad-spectrum sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher can protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays (remember to reapply sunscreen every few hours). Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to extra sensitive areas such as the lips (a lip balm with 15 SPF will do the trick). As an added measure, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (wraparound styles offer the most protection) to shield yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.
Wear the Right Moisturizer
Different weather affects your skin in different ways. Rich, heavy moisturizers are ideal for cold weather, when skin is drier than usual. Now that the weather is getting warmer, your skin is likely to build up more oil, which can clog up your pores. Swap your winter moisturizer for a lighter formula, which is more easily absorbed.
Exfoliating your skin is essential for clean, healthy pores and smooth, soft skin. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub to get rid of dead skin cells and shed previous sun damage. Aim to exfoliate once or twice a week, right before applying makeup, sunscreen or moisturizers.
Try Laser Skin Resurfacing
Do you have extensive areas of sun damage, such as sunspots, redness or premature wrinkles? If so, you may be an ideal candidate for laser skin resurfacing. Dr. Hause uses an advanced laser technique to effectively remove damaged skin cells, making way for fresh, glowing skin.
